Choosing the Right Artwork for Your Space

One or Two? How to Decide What Works Best on Your Walls

When it comes to styling art, one of the most common questions is:
“Should I hang one large piece, or go for a pair?”
The answer comes down to a mix of practical measurements and the feeling you want in the space. Here’s how to decide.

Step One

Measure the Wall Space

Start by measuring the width of the wall area you want to fill. A simple rule of thumb is that your artwork should cover about two-thirds of the width of the wall or the furniture it hangs above (sofa, console, bed, etc.).

Small areas or narrow walls → A single canvas usually feels balanced and uncluttered.

Wide walls or open living spaces → A set of two (or more) helps anchor the area and prevents it from looking sparse.

Step Two

Decide on the Feeling You Want in the Room

Art doesn’t just take up space — it changes how a room feels. Ask yourself:

Do I want calm focus and simplicity? → Choose one piece.

Do I want movement, balance, and impact? → Choose a pair (or more).

This step ensures your choice isn’t just practical, but also intentional.

Step Three

If You Choose Two, Get the Spacing Right

The magic of a pair comes down to the gap between them.

Smaller walls: keep pieces closer together, around 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) apart. This keeps them unified and intentional.

Larger walls (especially with big canvases like 125 x 125 cm): open up the spacing to 20–40 cm (8–16 inches). This gives each piece breathing room while still reading as a set.

💡 Tip: Use painter’s tape to mark out where each piece will sit before you hang. It’s a quick, mess-free way to check proportions and spacing in real time.

Choosing the Right Artwork for Your Space

The Bottom Line

One piece: Ideal for smaller walls, nooks, or when you want focus and simplicity.

Two pieces: Perfect for larger spaces, bringing balance, flow, and impact.

Spacing matters: 5–10 cm for smaller walls, up to 20–40 cm for larger walls and oversized pieces.

With these steps, you’ll know exactly how to style your walls with confidence; no guesswork, just the right choice for both your space and the atmosphere you want to create.
