About Mixed Media Paintings

I've spent years refining my truly unique style of art. When I started out, I felt overwhelmed with the entire process of refining my original style. I didn't know where to start, or what media I needed to use.

So, I found my local art supply store, purchased a blank canvas and some acrylic paints, and started painting.

And let me tell you, the artwork wasn't anything special.

I had no idea of what made for a strong composition, how to combine a complementary palette of colours, and how to effectively create an original piece that simply looked good on a wall.

This was 15 years ago.

Since that time, I've been learning, growing, planning, improving.

I've moved away from simply using one type of paint or medium to create my work.

My original paintings are now layered, faceted and complex, mixed media pieces.

If 'mixed media' is a new term to you, keep reading.

Mixed media art involves mixing different creative mediums to create work that incorporates two or more art forms.

It's a very broad term that can encompass almost anything which can be used to create an artwork.

Commonly, this might look like a combination of paints, inks, oil pastels, different types of paper, canvas and collage, photography... the list goes on.

If you've read my 'about me' biography here, you'll know that I combine the progressive use of digital painting technology, with traditional mediums such as acrylics, inks, impasto and artist varnish.

By combining the latest digital painting technology with traditional methods, the result is my truly unique style of art.

So, you might be wondering, what is the process I follow in detail, to create my paintings?

It starts with hours of seeking inspiration from the world around me.

I draw this inspiration from my life experiences, and the beautiful places that I've travelled to.

After receiving inspiration for a collection, the planning begins.

I'll create a vision board of how I see my next collection forming.

I'll gather photography from my travels, and create a colour palette that is cohesive and inspiring.

I then start planning individual pieces.

I create drafts by putting together collages of shapes and colours, to design the artwork's flow and their composition.

Then I start painting, using digital media and tools.

And this takes many, many hours. Digitally painting stroke by stroke, on an extra large format digital canvas, my artworks come to life.

By painting digitally, I can create layers of colour, light, and transparency that are impossible to achieve with opaque oil or acrylic paint alone.

This digital artwork layer forms the base of my mixed media original paintings, and pieces of collage that I apply to a blank canvas with other media.

I then apply paint, other paper/collage mediums, add texture, apply thick strokes of impasto, and then artists varnish to seal and finalise the piece. More hours. More enegery. More of my heart and soul that goes into each and every painting with thousands of handpainted brushstrokes.

If you have any further questions around how I create my artwork or would like to know more about the process and mediums I use in more detail, I encourage you to reach out to me.

And I look forward to developing and evolving my style even more. I'll keep you updated as I do.
